An Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Assessment is performed by an Occupational Therapist and involves assessment of a person’s independence and safety in performing personal and domestic activities in the home.
This may include their ability to mobilise within the home; shower; dress; undertake personal hygiene tasks; and perform domestic tasks such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, gardening and other activities which they typically perform.
An ADL assessment not only provides increased safety and independence in the home but can be useful in facilitating a person’s recovery from an injury or illness.
For employees working from home, with non work-related injuries or medical conditions, an ADL assessment will provide peace of mind for the employer. For example, provision of a toilet surround for a person using crutches for mobility will minimise the risk of falling when getting on/off the toilet.
